Benitez: Madrid were in control

Rafa Benitez felt Real Madrid were rarely out of control against Real Sociedad and praised Cristiano Ronaldo’s contribution.

Ronaldo scored twice as Madrid beat the Basques 3-1, but the Coach was still booed and the supporters weren’t united in backing the home team.

“The team has done many things well, worked very well. Let every man have his own opinion, I have mine,” Benitez said post-match, Marca reports.

“We’re always glad to have won. I want a team that keeps winning matches, so fans can enjoy victories, good play and trophies. The balance will be seen at the end. We stay on a good line.

“We controlled the game but for 10 minutes. We had control and we had chances that we didn’t take that would have made us more comfortable. The players responded very well, I have to compliment them on that.

“I congratulated Cristiano and the whole team and the bench because they were united in a situation that needed character and personality.

“After missing the penalty there was personality. The work has been very good and we have to continue on this line.

“We’re a team that has a lot of possession but with the virtue of having very dangerous fast players in attack. We had more possession in the first half and less in the second because they saw the chance to get something.

“Lucas Vazquez scored a great goal. He has speed and gives the best of himself. My job is to try to make the most of the players on the bench and when they do good work, bring that freshness to help the team.”
