Eusebio rues ‘circumstances’

Eusebio Sacristan declined to blame referee Jose Luis Gonzalez Gonzalez for Real Sociedad’s defeat to Real Madrid.

Gonzalez Gonzalez awarded two first half penalties to Los Blancos, the first missed, the second scored, Madrid eventually winning 3-1 in a game that saw both Imanol Agirretxe and Sergio Canales stretchered off.

“I don’t like thinking about circumstances for a negative result. When we win, it depends on us, and when we lose, the same,” Eusebio said post-match, AS reports.

“I’m sure we could have done more things to take a positive result here. It was a good opportunity. Then there are circumstances that went against us. Injuries and other circumstances.

“Negative circumstances, especially the injury to Canales [believed to be a ruptured ACL] make us very sad. The game had circumstances unfavourable to us.

“Whether by bad luck or by coincidence, but this referee has happened to us again and it’s a pity.

“It was a good opportunity, it was a mismatch in the first half but at 1-1 we had our best time. We lacked the final punch. It cost us a lot.”
