Villa ‘wants Spain call, but…’

David Villa admits he hopes to get a recall to the Spain squad but knows it’s unlikely, and compared Barcelona’s MSN to the forward line of which he was part.

Villa hasn’t turned out for La Roja since Spain’s last World 2014 game, a 3-0 win over Australia in which he scored to solidify his place as his country’s record-scorer in his 97th cap.

“[It’s complicated because] there are other very good young forwards with a great future,” AS quotes the New York City FC forward as saying at an event in Gijon.

“I’m very close to 100 games with the national team. I’d go back, but just like when I was there, now I’m not I’ll say it’s something that rests with [Vicente Del Bosque].”

Villa was part of a successful Barca attack, with Lionel Messi and Pedro Rodriguez, but admitted he sees today’s version, Messi joined by Luis Suarez and Neymar, as the standard.

“The current attack is the best, not just in the history of Barca, but from any team,” he insisted.

Asked who he favours for the title this season, having represented both Barca and Atletico Madrid, Villa couldn’t pick between his former clubs and Real Madrid, but lamented there weren’t more teams in the running.

“The fight will always be between Madrid and Barca, although there is also Atletico,” he pointed out.

“I’d like it if there were more teams fighting for the title.

“It’s essential Sporting Gijon stay up. The most important thing achieved in the past two years is the fans are filled with pride, and football lovers in general.”
