Betis, Espanyol through in Copa

Real Betis and Espanyol are among the teams to have made safe progress through the Copa del Rey’s Round of 16.

Betis edged past Primera rivals Sporting Gijon with a 5-3 aggregate win, a 3-3 draw in the second leg at El Molinon following a 2-0 home win at Benito Villamarin.

Espanyol made it through 3-2 on aggregate against Levante, a 1-1 draw at Ciutat de Valencia preceding a 2-1 win at Cornella-El Prat for Los Periquitos, now under the direction of Constantin Galca.

Sevilla avoided a slip-up against Logrones after their 3-0 away win gave them a commanding first leg lead and it was compounded by a 2-0 triumph at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Deportivo La Coruna had a tougher time against Llagostera but did enough despite being held to a 1-1 draw at Riazor, the 2-1 win in the first leg seeing the Galicians through.

Barcelona are already through to the next round after they played their tie with Villanovense early, due to their Club World Cup involvement, the minnows holding Barca to a goalless draw before falling to a 6-1 Camp Nou rout.

Cadiz are also in the next round, as it stands, after Real Madrid were expelled from the competition for fielding the ineligible Denis Cheryshev.
