Marcelino proud of Villarreal ‘guts’

Marcelino has commended his Villarreal side for facing their recent spate of injuries with “guts” ahead of Sunday’s early trip to Getafe in La Liga.

The Yellow Submarine have been forced to do without Leo Baptistao and Adrian Lopez, while Cedric Bakambu has encountered fitness problems, leaving Roberto Soldado as their only available striker, but the Coach believes his side have worked wonders in the circumstances.

“It’s clear that for a team who normally play with two strikers to not be able to for a month and a half is a major disadvantage,” he said at a Press conference.

“When it continues over time it becomes a problem, so it’s commendable to see how the team have overcome this situation.

“It’s testament to the commitment, effort, courage and ability of the players.

“We’re now depleted, especially in attack. In fact, since we played against Athletic [Bilbao in September], we’ve alternated between two strikers or less because we have players who have been playing with discomfort.

“It’s a situation that’s been given to us and we must face it with guts.

“It’s bad for everyone because [our forwards] usually put away the chances we’ve wasted.

“We must compete to the maximum [against Getafe] and be clinical, solid and intense in our approach.

“We have seven games in which we have to try to get as many points as possible.

“We know that sometimes we won’t get what we want because we must understand that playing games every three days isn’t easy and more so when you lack a clinical edge and have a young team.”
