‘Depor given a lesson in humanity’

Victor Sanchez says Deportivo La Coruna have been given “a lesson in humanity” by relatives of the fan who died at Riazor in last week’s Galician derby.

Depor travel to Las Palmas on Saturday, hoping to make it back-to-back wins after their 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo, and the Coach revealed the side were visited by the widow and daughter of the supporter who fatally suffered a heart attack while watching his team claim regional bragging rights.

“We had a visit from the widow and daughter of the fan who died in the match against Celta,” he said at a Press conference.

“They came to give us encouragement. It was a lesson in humanity.

“It’s a match for all the 20 players who have travelled. They’re all in with the same chance of making the XI.

“Las Palmas are a very competitive team, as are everyone in the best League in the world.

“Since the coaching change, they’ve played a combination game, based on long spells of possession.

“We have to give the best account of ourselves. When we’ve reduced the intensity, the results haven’t been the ones we were looking for.

“We’ve learned our lesson and we’re not afraid of anything. You can’t be in this beautiful profession.

“Manuel Pablo and [Juan Carlos] Valeron are legends of the Spanish League.

“We’ll embrace Valeron and reminisce all the old times with him after the game, not before or during.”
