Valdes to Espanyol in January?

Victor Valdes could return to Spain after an unhappy spell at Manchester United with Espanyol touted as a possible destination.

Valdes left Barcelona when his contract expired in the summer of 2014 and was carrying a serious knee injury at the time, eventually being given the chance by United manager and former Barca Coach Louis Van Gaal to sign up at Old Trafford.

But Van Gaal and Valdes have been at odds for some time with the Dutchman effectively banishing Valdes from the training ground, Van Gaal claiming and Valdes denying that the goalkeeper refused to play in a reserve game.

Valdes’ United contract expires in the summer of 2016 and the Premier League club are willing to let him go, and Mundo Deportivo cites reports from England of contact between his representatives and Los Periquitos.

Espanyol recently came under Chinese ownership and may need the injection of finance from Chen Yansheng’s Rastar Group to meet Valdes’ pay packet.

Valdes’ family is still in Catalonia and it’s suggested that may be a tempting factor in getting the six-time Primera title winner to Cornella-El Prat.
