Heiko Westermann believes Real Betis need to keep clear heads in their home games, starting with ‘La Liga’s strongest team’ Atletico Madrid.

Atletico visit Benito Villamarin on Sunday as La Liga resumes following the international break, and Westermann has considered the start to his first campaign in Spain.

“The first few weeks were difficult for me. Then everything was better. I think the Spanish League is the best,” he revealed, before praising a teammate and looking to the future.

“This is a great group. I didn’t know Ruben Castro before but he’s very good, a very clever player.

“The club will grow in the coming years. It’s a club with a great history and a lot of fans, but I prefer to keep our feet on the ground, work hard and win the next game.”

Atletico are the next opponents and Westermann hopes their visit heralds a change in Betis’ approach to home games.

“We have to be calm and be stronger at home. Sometimes we want to win in the first 45 minutes,” he complained.

“We know this match won’t be easy. We have to be solid because they’re the strongest team in La Liga. It will be a good test.”
