James ‘wants new Madrid deal’

James Rodriguez has reportedly asked Real Madrid for a new contract that would put him in the top bracket of earners at the club.

AS claims the Colombia international wants to be on par with Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale, who earn in the region of €10m-a-year.

James was an €80m signing from Monaco in 2014 after impressing at that year’s World Cup but despite his substantial fee, his contract is relatively low.

Madrid placed James in the third tier of earners, at the level of Pepe, Toni Kroos, Raphael Varane, Marcelo and Luka Modric, who are on between €4.5m and €6m.

Ramos, Bale, Pepe and Dani Carvajal have all in recent months received new deals and while James isn’t issuing the club with an ultimatum, he believes his salary should not only match his transfer fee but his contributions on the pitch.

AS indeed describes his debut season as ‘brilliant’ after he netted 17 times in 46 appearances and provided a number of assists for other players, most notably Cristiano Ronaldo.
