Asensio ‘wants Spain, but…’

Marco Asensio affirms his desire to play for Spain but confirms there was contact from the Netherlands and ‘you never know…’

Asensio, a European Championship winner at Under-19 level with La Roja, also qualifies for the Netherlands and told AS he did receive an approach from the Dutch.

“There was some contact. I’m very grateful, but my idea is to continue with Spain. I’ve always been here and they trust me, but you never know,” he said.

“Just this weekend [the Dutch side of his family] asked me to go with the Netherlands. There was some hesitation. I was concerned because there was a lot of noise, but it’s all settled.”

Asensio, on loan at Espanyol from Real Madrid, has progressed to the Spain Under-21 side, but revealed he hasn’t had any contact from senior team Coach Vicente Del Bosque.

“No, but we have examples like Alvaro Morata or Thiago Alcantara. They give those of us in the teams below confidence,” he pointed out when asked about speaking with Del Bosque.

“It’s very difficult [to get into the Euro 2016 squad]. There are a lot of players. Right now I see it as a distant dream. I’m focused on the Under-21s.

“I have adjusted well [to the Under-21s]. It shows on the pitch. They are sudden changes but football moves very fast and you have to seize the moment.”
