‘Ronaldo & Bale unbalance Madrid’

Jorge Valdano has claimed that Real Madrid “lose their discipline” when Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale are both playing.

The Welshman made his comeback in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Sevilla, and Los Blancos’ former sporting director believes his return has unbalanced the side, with Cristiano Ronaldo not known for his defensive contributions and currently “playing under protest”.

“[Ronaldo’s] not comfortable. He prefers playing on the left, as he always has,” he told Cadena SER.

“It’s difficult to determine if it’s because he isn’t scoring or it’s because of the position he’s playing, but he’s not enjoying his game. He’s playing under protest.

“I couldn’t imagine a [Madrid] defeat after the first half-hour. The roles were reversed, especially the lack of aggression.

“The team dropped off badly. It’s very difficult to see a Real Madrid team play without pride.

“Keylor [Navas] greatly influenced some wins, but it must be remembered that they received most of their praise for pressing high up the pitch.

“They recovered the ball quickly and were strong, but of course, with Ronaldo and [Gareth] Bale [both playing], there’s less pressing.

“The team have lost their discipline to stop their opponents’ attacks in their own half.

“Danilo has been shy and is finding the weight of the Real Madrid shirt heavy. He’s struggling to stay calm.”
