Borja & Valverde named October’s best

Eibar striker Borja Baston and Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde have been named La Liga’s player and Coach of the month for October respectively.

Borja, a summer arrival from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan, scored three goals against Las Palmas, Sevilla and Barcelona last month to keep Los Armeros firmly in European contention.

“I’m very happy to win this award. It’s an individual one, but it’s thanks to the team that I’ve won it,” he said upon receiving the accolade.

He added to Eibar’s official website: “We’re doing well and it’s an award for the entire squad.

“Hopefully we can win more of these awards because it’ll mean that we’re continuing to do things well.

“I’m very happy to be in this team. There are many young players who want to succeed here.”

Valverde, meanwhile, has guided Athletic into the top half of La Liga after an unbeaten October, in which his side won three and drew one of their four games.

“Athletic have climbed the table at a rapid rate thanks to wins against Valencia, Real Betis and Sporting Gijon, plus a valuable draw at Deportivo La Coruna. Much of this has been down to the Coach," justified the League on its official website.

“In addition to demonstrating very good attacking ability (11 goals scored), they have played some very attractive football, which helped to earn them their first away win of the season at the Benito Villamarin.”
