Marcelo a Clasico doubt

Real Madrid are waiting for news on the extent of Marcelo’s hamstring injury, suffered in the Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Marcelo lasted barely 30 minutes with Marca noting he is the 12th Madrid player to go down injured this season, and, in his case, it’s felt to be a case of burnout as there are no other natural left-backs in Rafa Benitez’s squad.

Indeed, it is pointed out that the only game Marcelo has missed was at Malmo, and only Cristiano Ronaldo holds the same ‘un-droppable’ status.

Nacho replaced Marcelo against PSG and shortly after coming out scored the winning goal and it would be he or Alvaro Arbeloa – also currently injured – who would deputise for the Brazilian.

The injury isn’t thought to be as bad as first feared, according to Marca’s sources at the club, while Marcelo himself insisted he was fine as he passed through the Press area on Tuesday night.

Madrid hope to use the forthcoming international break to help players back to fitness and, all being well, everyone currently absent, could return for the Clasico, the first game after the internationals.

But Marcelo, Alvaro Arbeloa, Dani Carvajal and Karim Benzema are all doubtful for the weekend visit to Sevilla.
