Yansheng ‘confidence in Sergio’

New Espanyol owner Chen Yansheng has backed Coach Sergio Gonzalez and discussed plans for the future on the pitch.

Yansheng, whose Rastar Group have taken control of the Catalans, discussed business plans for the club in an interview with Mundo Deportivo before he was asked about the short-term future for Espanyol, both the winter transfer window and Sergio after unhappy scenes in the draw with Granada.

“We understand the fans want transfers. But that’s for the sporting director to talk about,” he replied.

“The main problem is financial and we must resolve that as soon as possible. The race is long and anything can happen. You can’t say we have a good team or a bad team for losing a game. We will work to make a strong team, as I said before.

“We have in mind players to sign from China, and not just for the first team but also the grassroots. We’re thinking of a player-exchange. We’ve spoken to the club managers on this issue and we’re also planning a tour of China for the first team.

“It will be important for China and for Espanyol. We will be pioneers in projects and I’m sure many people in China will follow my example.

“We won’t only keep the cantera but reinforce it. We know the grassroots of Espanyol is an example for many clubs, they have won many titles and have had many important players. We won’t touch anything. We intend to help them improve.

“I was at Cornella-El Prat for Espanyol-Granada, yes. As a football fan I understand the fans were not happy. Espanyol has a medium-high level and I’m convinced that will grow with the club.

“We have full confidence in the Coach’s work and we won’t interfere. We’re very pleased to have reached an agreement to help the club overcome economic issues.

“I would ask the fans continue to support the club, to trust in the project and that together we can grow Espanyol a lot.”
