‘Messi in Ballon d’Or pole’

Andriy Shevchenko believes Lionel Messi is ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in the Ballon d’Or running, and no player comes close to the Barcelona-Real Madrid pair.

Shevchenko has spoken to Marca in his capacity as an ambassador for the Laureus Foundation and discussed what football can offer disadvantaged children.

“I can speak from experience, as football played an important role in my education. It gave me many opportunities in my life,” he recalled.

“It’s important to socialise. It’s not only playing, it helps people connect to each other. We can do a lot more for children and that’s why I’m here.”

Shevchenko, Ballon d’Or winner in 2004 and third place in 1999 and 2000, was asked for a prediction on the identity of the 2015 honouree.

“Ronaldo and Messi are favourites again, of course. The last five years they have evolved into superlative players, the quality of football they produce is fantastic,” he acknowledged.

“I think Messi, having won the Champions League, is in pole position to win the Ballon d’Or. There are still a lot of games to play and I’m sure he’ll score between 50 and 70 goals this season.

“It’s hard to see [anyone competing with Messi or Ronaldo]. Eden Hazard had a great season with Chelsea and won the Premier League. He’s not had a good start but I’m sure he’ll be back.

“He’s one to consider for the next five or six years. I’m sure he can win it.”
