Valverde revels in ‘best spell’

Ernesto Valverde revelled in the “best spell” of Athletic Bilbao's season after Sunday's 3-1 win at Real Betis.

Two goals from Inaki Williams, along with a third from Raul Garcia late on, inspired Los Leones to their third victory on the bounce, and the Coach believes his side are well on their way towards realising their objectives for the season.

“We should've scored more, but I'm very happy with the win. We deserved it,” he said after the game.

“We encouraged them to get back into the game at 1-2, but although we suffered a bit for 5-10 minutes, we didn't grant our opponents many chances and quickly regained our control of the game.

“It's our third straight victory and we're in our best spell of the season, [August's Supercopa] aside.

“We wanted to recover the points we dropped at the start of the season.

“We started the season a little tired, but now we have more air flowing through our sails. We're a team who always competes.

“We're in form and getting points on the board. We're moving forward and the objective is to finish in the European places and make progress in the Europa League and Copa [del Rey].

“[Oscar de Marcos] suffered a sprained ankle. We'll see if he recovers.

“[Williams] has always shown he can score goals. We can exploit his speed and our counterattacking ability with him on the pitch.

“Hopefully he also starts scoring goals at home because so far they've all been away from home.”
