Mel calls for goal-line technology

Pepe Mel has called for goal-line technology to be implemented in La Liga after Real Betis’ 1-1 draw with Granada on Saturday was marred by a ghost goal.

Diego Mainz appeared to have headed home the winner for Granada after Ruben Castro had equalised for Betis from the penalty spot, only for Vincenzo Rennella to make a debatable clearance off the line.

“The game started badly because we started badly,” he said after the game.

“We didn’t keep the ball, erred in our passing and gifted a goal. We did everything backwards and lost 20 minutes of play.

“We recovered gradually, but at no time was it a good match for Betis because if you lose the ball quickly, it’s difficult to go forward.

“We played with too many hesitations and misgivings in defence.

“The best thing about the match was the point. We have to work hard [in training] because we have many things to work on.

“[On Mainz’s ghost goal], in the Premier League, I remember when technology awarded [West Brom] a goal.

“It was easy, the referee only needed to wait five seconds and everyone was in agreement, but in Spain we don’t even know when the rematch will be.”
