Levante sack Alcaraz

Levante have sacked Coach Lucas Alcaraz following Sunday’s 4-0 home defeat to Real Sociedad.

The former Recreativo, Almeria and Granada boss replaced Jose Luis Mendilibar eight games into last season and subsequently guided the Valencians to safety, but he has paid the price for another poor start, which has seen the side fall to the bottom of La Liga.

A statement on Levante’s official website reads: “Levante’s Board of Directors had an extraordinary meeting on Sunday evening at Ciutat de Valencia, also attended by sporting director Manolo Salvador, in which the decision was made to dispense with the services of Coach Lucas Alcaraz and his staff.

"The Board appreciate the professionalism Lucas Alcaraz, his assistant Jesus Canada and physio Miguel Angel Campos and fitness coach Miguel Angel Campos have shown during his stay at Levante entity, and we wish them all the best on both a professional and personal level.”

On the topic of Alcaraz’s successor, however, Catalan admitted the search had not yet begun.

“We have decided to dispense with the services of Lucas Alcaraz, and from there we will begin talking to people who can take over the direction of the first team,” the patron added.

“We’ve yet to decide who the next Coach will be. We only made the decision [to sack Alcaraz] today [Sunday].”

The 49-year-old becomes La Liga’s second managerial casaulty after Paco Herrera last week.
