Paco: Room for improvement

Paco Jemez refused to get too carried away after Rayo Vallecano’s 3-0 win against Espanyol on Friday, insisting “we can still do much better”.

Roberto Trashorras’ penalty, followed by a brace from Javi Guerra, ended Los Vallecanos’ run of three straight defeats, but the Coach was not overly happy with his side’s performance as Tono was also forced to save a late penalty.

“It was a match that we needed,” he said after the game.

“Sometimes you have a good game but don’t win. No matter how well you play, if the results don’t follow then things become more difficult.

“A match like [Friday’s] goes some way towards confirming our belief that this is the right way to go, but there are still things to improve on.

“We can still do much better, making fewer mistakes and being more patient.

“We must also have much more control of the game and avoid giving away penalties, even though we saved it.

“Sometimes the result papers over cracks, and I’m happy with our performance and effort, but we didn’t do everything well. There’s still plenty of room for improvement.

“We did very good defensive work to stop [Espanyol’s forwards]. [Marco Asensio and Felipe Caicedo] came into the match in great form, but we stopped them both.

“We worked hard and read [Espanyol’s] game. The excellent work of our defensive line was one of the keys to the win.”
