Sergio Gonzalez hailed Espanyol’s “complete” performance en route to Saturday’s 3-1 win at Real Betis in La Liga.
Goals from Enzo Roco, Felipe Caicedo and Victor Sanchez fired Los Periquitos to a much-needed three points at the Benito Villamarin, having endured back-to-back defeats beforehand, and the Coach struggled to contain his delight after the game.
“We gave a very complete performance. Points are always important, but our reaction [to their recent run of defeats] was even more so,” he said.
“The players became aware after the international break that the only way they could succeed was by playing as a unit.
“We played very compactly, with a lot of solidarity and tremendous effort.
“I especially valued those aspects as [the Benito Villamarin] asked a lot of the players, sometimes too much.
“We put up a defensive fortress from the outset and from there we scored the goals.”
