Sergio backs under-fire Pau

Sergio Gonzalez has leapt to the defence of Pau Lopez following fierce criticism of the Espanyol goalkeeper in recent weeks.

The Spain Under-21 international was named Kiko Casilla’s successor at Cornella-El Prat in the summer but has conceded 16 goals in only seven games this season, leading to a section of his own fans booing him and his Twitter account being deactivated.

“I don’t have any doubts about [Pau],” the Coach said at a Press conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to Real Betis in La Liga.

“I spoke to Pau after [Spain’s] Under-21 match [earlier in the week] and he was serene, although he’s not in an ideal situation on a sporting level because of the [bad] reviews of his performances.

“I was surrounded by veterans when I debuted as a 20-year-old. Pau only has two posts and a bar.

“He’s taking everything as he normally does and ignoring the boos.

“When we return to playing, he’ll do well and transmit serenity.

“We’ve been looking forward to the match against Betis, and we’re going with the feeling that we’ll win.

“As for Levante [in the Copa del Rey], they’re a team in our League who are robust, play with five defenders and are difficult to play away from home.

“It’ll be a balanced tie, which will be decided by small details. I’m quite fired up for it, given I played out the final year of my playing career there.”
