Jemez plays down Barca result

Paco Jemez doesn’t believe the result is the most important aspect of the match when his Rayo Vallecano side play Barcelona.

The teams meet this weekend as La Liga resumes following the Euro 2016 qualifiers and Rayo travel to Camp Nou.

“I have great confidence in my squad, but the least of my worries when we play Barcelona is the result,” he said, Mundo Deportivo reports.

“I want to see other things, a brave team that plays as equals. Although we’re smaller [than Barca] the result will largely depend on our attitude.

“Winning at Camp Nou is very difficult, but it isn’t impossible. But to fool Barca twice [Celta Vigo having been the first] is complicated.

“If anyone thinks it is easy [because of Barca’s injuries], they’re wrong. [Andres] Iniesta and [Lionel] Messi are irreplaceable at Barca and in any team. They’re unique. There may be good players to replace them but not at that level.

“Still, Luis Enrique has ways of getting a team that can win against anyone.”

Jemez expanded on his feelings regarding the Rayo squad after four years in the dugout at Vallecas.

“I have great trust in this squad, because I see them try to improve,” he noted.

“We have to try to improve and overcome barriers. There are no promises but we want to have a great League and Cup.

“We have to go further and improve our numbers, records and position in the League. What I don’t like is not getting something important because we didn’t try.”
