Cesc ‘happy and proud’

Cesc Fabregas declared himself ‘happy and proud’ at reaching 100 caps for Spain, but doesn’t want to stop there.

The Chelsea midfielder captained La Roja to victory over Ukraine in their final Euro 2016 qualifier, missing a penalty in Kiev, and spoke to reporters after the match.

“I’m happy and proud. I’m satisfied with the work done and I’m eager for more matches,” he said, AS reports.

“It’s taken almost 100 games to wear the armband and hopefully it will happen again many more times. I’m very happy to wear the shirt of the national team.”

Cesc was asked about a few of his teammates on the night – Isco and Thiago Alcantara, who caught the eye with their performances, and David De Gea, who arguably took man of the match honours.

“These are the opportunities the Coach has [to blood Isco and Thiago]. We played very well in the first half,” he said of his midfield colleagues.

“They are young, they want to play, they want to please and we know the talent they have. A very promising future awaits the national team.

“[De Gea] is the future goalkeeper of the national team. The feeling in the team is that Ukraine’s chances were isolated, from corners or dead balls.

“We were better in the game, played very seriously. We could have killed the game with the penalty.”

Spain were watched by Cesc’s club manager Jose Mourinho, and Cesc was fully aware of the Portuguese’s presence and spoke warmly about his boss.

“Of course I knew he was there. We’re leaving for London together,” he explained.

“Mou is a good Coach, a winner, a person who knows what he does and what he wants. We’re privileged to be coached by him.”
