Cerezo: Future bright for Atleti

Enrique Cerezo believes there are plenty of reasons for Atletico Madrid to be optimistic about the future but insists his club will never forget their humility.

Los Colchoneros have established themselves as a top-three side in Spain under Diego Simeone’s reign, headlined by a La Liga title two seasons ago, having endured years of mediocrity since their previous triumph in 1996, and the President is adamant that the seeds for a sustained period of success have been sowed.

“We’re not a team who can boast about how things have always gone right, but we’ve always been able to count on our fans,” he told Marca.

“[For the past decade], we’ve had institutional tranquillity and become a benchmark [for the trophies won].

“We’re operating under the policy of not spending more than we earn. We don’t only aim to win trophies, we also aim to break even.

“We’ve never wanted to sell a player. Those who left only did because they wanted to.

“We’ve laid the foundations for a new training complex and stadium, [the latter of] which will be the most comfortable and modern in Europe.”
