‘Laporte wouldn’t be considered if…’

Aymeric Laporte would not be considered by Spain if he played his club football in Germany, according to Borussia Monchengladbach defender Alvaro Dominguez.

Laporte was suggested as a defensive option following Sergio Ramos and Inigo Martinez's withdrawals from La Roja's party for games against Luxembourg and Ukraine, despite representing France at youth level, while Dominguez has not added to his two caps since leaving Atletico Madrid for the Bundesliga in 2012.

“It would be great to return [to the Spain squad],” the 27-year-old told Marca.

“There are lots of players outside of Spain who deserve to play in the national team. [Vicente del Bosque] mustn't only look inside great teams.

“There are some top Spanish players, capable of big performances, at Napoli, Fiorentina, West Ham, Everton…

“[Gladbach] was a step forward in my career. I spent four years at Atletico and played twice for Spain.

“I haven't been called up since going abroad, but I don't think [going abroad] has made me a worse player.

“If [Laporte] played for Schalke then he wouldn't get called up.

“If you want to represent Spain, it's easier when you're playing for Athletic.”
