Del Bosque: Guardiola has Spain qualities

Vicente Del Bosque believes Pep Guardiola has the qualities to coach Spain but ‘there are good candidates,’ and chipped on Rafa Benitez and Sergio Ramos.

Del Bosque is planning on stepping down and retiring after Euro 2016 – and there are reports of Spanish Football Federation President Angel Maria Villar considering how to replace the World Cup winner – and he was asked about the prospect of Guardiola being his successor.

“I like him a lot. Apart from anything else he is a very good Coach,” Marca reports Del Bosque telling Cadena Cope.

“He has the qualities to be Spain Coach. There are also good candidates in Spain.”

Villar reportedly wants Del Bosque to stay on and the trainer hinted he could change his mind, suggesting a final decision won’t be taken too early.

“When we’ve qualified for Euro 2016 it will be the time to speak. You don’t have to be forceful in football,” he cautioned.

“I will go to the Euros with the decision made, if I continue after or not.”

The subject of Benitez’s approach to the derby against Atletico Madrid was also raised and Del Bosque offered support to one of his peers, as well as touching on the row between Benitez and Ramos.

“Rafa likes balance and tried to carry it out. His Madrid is an organised team. When you’re Coach of Barcelona or Madrid you can’t be offensive or defensive,” he said.

“[The spat between Ramos and Benitez] is something between a player and a Coach who don’t give it any more importance. They’re intelligent and they know what to do.”
