Juanfran: Madrid played like Atleti

Juanfran has suggested Real Madrid borrowed a page from Atletico Madrid’s playbook in the derby draw, adding that is no bad thing.

The game at Vicente Calderon finished in a 1-1 draw but Los Blancos were criticised by some for not pressing for a greater advantage after opening the scoring.

“What Madrid did we have done many times. Score, drop back and try to counter-attack,” Juanfran told Onda Cero’s Al Primer Toque, Marca reports.

“I don’t know that Real Madrid can’t do that because we’ve done it a thousand times and we’re not a bad team. Playing well is getting results.”

Juanfran added that with both teams coming out of the game feeling they could have won, they can’t both be right, but regardless Atleti feel more respected by their city rivals than before, and again took issue with comments from Alvaro Arbeloa.

“Both teams feel it is two points lost so someone is fooling themselves,” the right-back pointed out.

“We don’t feel Madrid look down their noses at us. We know they respect us more than ever in recent years and take us very seriously.

“Arbeloa? When he said the derby is Atletico’s game of the year, I respect that is his opinion, but it’s not one I share.

“I’ve known him since we were young and I know he has a different way of thinking than I do or Gabi does, but everyone can say what they want.”
