Benitez: Madrid dropped two points

Rafa Benitez has claimed that Real Madrid “dropped two points” from their 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Sunday.

Madrid took the lead through Karim Benzema and survived an Atleti penalty, saved by Keylor Navas, but were forced to share bragging rights with their arch-rivals, courtesy of Luciano Vietto, leaving the Coach unhappy with his side’s inability to kill the game off.

“We controlled the first half but lacked the second goal, and we failed to profit from any of our counterattacks in the second,” the Coach said after the game.

“We were dominating the game in the first half, doing what we had to do and aware that it wasn’t easy, but [Atleti] did what was expected of them in the second.

“We hit [Atleti] on the break eight times but failed to supply the final pass. [Benzema came off because] the team needed freshening up.

“Credit must be given to Atletico for pushing up in the second half, but the feeling is that we’ve dropped two points.

“If we see only the last quarter of an hour, it’s true that Atletico pushed up, but we were in control ffor the other three.

“I can’t be happy because we drew but because we had control.

“[On Casemiro], I’ve played him in other games. He’s a player who can help us a lot. He’s very good for any type of match.

“It’s important that we approach every game without looking at what our rivals do.”
