Valverde rues ‘incredible’ defeat

Ernesto Valverde lamented Athletic Bilbao's “incredible” 2-1 Europa League defeat to AZ on Thursday in light of the chances they missed.

Los Leones fell to their third defeat in four matches as Eneko Boveda's own goal put the game to bed, despite Aritz Aduriz's late consolation, but the Coach struggled to come to terms with the result, citing his side's “very bad” finishing.

“It's incredible that we left empty-handed, but football is all about goals and you have to score them,” he said after the game.

“They got two so we must congratulate them. We had many chances to get ahead on the scoreboard, but after we missed our best one, a five-on-two break, we went into half-time a goal down.

“We were very direct going forward. Everyone saw that we we're capable of scoring and attacked in numbers, but we were caught out by surprise. We had a very bad inability to finish off our chances.

“It'll be a very even group. Partizan didn't start out as favourites but already have six points. Everything's up in the air.

“The match in Belgrade will be important and even more so after today's results.”
