‘Atletico ready for derby’

Atletico Madrid captain Gabi believes the team are ready for Sunday’s derby with Real Madrid despite two defeats in two games.

Los Colchoneros were beaten by Villarreal in their last La Liga outing and on Wednesday suffered a home Champions League reverse against Benfica.

“We’ll try to win on Sunday, we’re ready, we’re going to the game to win, as usual,” Gabi said, AS reports.

“The team did everything to win [against Benfica], especially in the first half with a lot of chances. But if you don’t finish off a team the stature of Benfica, you pay.

“In truth it’s a difficult situation for us but we didn’t do as badly [against Benfica] as against Villarreal.

“Nico Gaitan got lucky with two plays. We were overturned in attack, at corners, and we paid for it with two counter-attacks. We have to keep going and this is how we do better.

“4-3-3 leaves us a little more vulnerable in defence but a little freer in attack. The system has to adjust.

“Jackson Martinez isn’t scoring and it’s bothering him. He needs to unwind mentally and relax and help us improve and score goals.”
