Emery: Sevilla on the right track

Unai Emery believes Sevilla are on the right track for the rest of the season following Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano in La Liga.

The Andalucians secured their first League win of the campaign, Yevhen Konoplyanka coming off the substitutes’ bench to score a late winner for the Andalucians after Los Vallecanos had overturned a 2-0 deficit, but the Coach – while delighted with the three points – warns the hard work starts now.

“The win will help us regain our confidence. Now we must keep improving,” he said after the game.

“The team showed courage, but we still need more balance.

“The win offers us respite in the table and gives us tranquillity, but with the obligation of staying on the path [we’re now on].

“We had chances to earn a clearer result, but we must now focus on maintaining our confidence because anxiety crept in as conceding a goal generates fear and we don’t want to appear afraid.

“Konoplyanka is still lacking [in certain aspects] but entered the match and won it for us.

“We’ve told him what we want from him and we’ll continue to work together, but I’m convinced his qualities will help the team.

“He’ll continue to improve and [Saturday] was important, but we must have patience and perseverance [with him].

“[Sergio Rico] could have done more with [Rayo’s] goals, but it was a tough game and it’ll have helped him to improve and mature.

“[On playing Juventus on Wednesday], we’re playing against the Champions League runners-up. They’re a great team but we want to play well.”
