Emery: Sevilla have to work

Unai Emery has told Sevilla that only hard work will pull the team out of their predicament as a 2-0 defeat to Las Palmas left them bottom of the League.

Roque Mesa and Antolin Alcaraz scored as Sevilla left Gran Canaria without a point but Emery told reporters that the match wasn’t as one-sided as the score line suggests.

“We find ourselves in a situation where we can’t go any lower in the table. It was a good game, competitive, and we need to raise our self-esteem and change the situation,” Sevilla ABC quotes the Coach as saying.

“The circumstances aren’t going with us. In a physical game we needed to have success and whoever scored the first goal would get a great motivation. We had good chances but weren’t successful. They scored in their first clear chance.

“From there the circumstances didn’t favour us. There was a clear penalty we weren’t given.

“We don’t need to despair, but to look at our options and in terms of what the team has provided, there are positives, but circumstances haven’t helped us. A Grzegorz Krychowiak shot hit Kevin Gameiro…

“They scored a second goal and made it complicated. The outcome is negative and we have to reverse the situation. We can only work. We have to congratulate Las Palmas.

“This is a mature team with the characteristics needed for the moment. All our energy is focused on changing this Sunday.

“Of course we have to meet the fans’ expectations. They have very optimistic expectations. The players are aware of the form, the losing streak, and they know what they owe to Sevilla.

“I’m sure the circumstances will change and the wind will blow in our favour again.”
