‘Rayo win would be important’

Sporting Gijon Coach Abelardo believes a win for his side at Rayo Vallecano would be ‘an important step.’

Los Rojiblancos have made a good start to their return to the top flight, picking up five points from a possible 12, and the trainer feels a win in Vallecas would send the right message.

“I’ll call on the players I think can play best against Rayo. Any changes are a technical decision,” AS reports Abelardo as saying, although he did not Nacho Cases is carrying an injury.

“Rayo are a team that plays good football, likes to have the ball, so we have to be vigilant in defence. Beating Deportivo La Coruna has given us confidence.

“If we win in Vallecas it will be another important step and we could be in a privileged position. Rayo, despite their changes, still have the imprint of the Coach.

“He’s been there several seasons and that’s important for a small club. His work and that of his staff has been very good.

“Rayo control the ball more than we do. We are more in the transitions and other defensive concepts. We each have our own style that gives results.”
