‘Valencia form has to change soon’

Nuno Santo admits Valencia are in a rut and need to pull themselves out of it after their first defeat of the season, away at Espanyol.

Victor Alvarez’s first half goal decided the tie and after there were shouts for the Coach to resign in the weekend’s goalless draw at home to Real Betis, the pressure is on Nuno to correct his team’s form.

“We have to change this situation as soon as possible and that starts on Friday [at home to Granada],” he said post-match, AS reports.

“I thought we were the better team in the first half. We had chances, but we didn’t in the second half. We didn’t play well in the second half.

“I make my decisions with clarity and with the full confidence in the players. I have a squad that provides options for this match and I think they were good.

“It costs you when you lose but there’s only one way to react – spend more time and work to prevent this happening again. We have to win on Friday.

“I never have doubts. About my work or my players. Only if we’re together and united will we emerge from this situation. It’s not a situation I like but we’ve been together a long time and have a clear conscience. Our union and relationships can’t be doubted.

“We’ll start looking for a solution [for why Valencia can’t score]. We’re always looking for solutions. I’d be worried if we weren’t creating chances.

“We are creating chances and we have to improve. I have total confidence in the forwards.”
