Report: Alonso in tax investigation

It’s reported that Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso is the latest player to come under scrutiny for taxes paid regarding image rights.

El Mundo say a complaint was filed for the years between 2010 and 2012, when Alonso was a Real Madrid player.

The case is compared by El Mundo to that of Javier Mascherano, who it is alleged avoided paying €1.5m in taxes through an image rights arrangement.

El Mundo say a criminal investigation has been opened but it is at an early stage and has a further six months to run.

Alonso’s lawyer, Ivan Zaldua, has defended his client against the allegations, insisting that the former Spain international has at all times complied with the law.

“We are calm because we have not concealed anything from the tax office and he has been taxed in accordance with the regulations at all times, so we are sure everything will be clarified,” Zaldua is quoted as saying.
