Jemez: Rayo’s season starts now

Paco Jemez believes Rayo Vallecano’s season starts now following Sunday’s 1-0 win at Las Palmas in La Liga.

Javi Guerra scored the only goal of the game to earn Los Vallecanos’ their first win after four matches, and the Coach is hopeful that his side can now approach the rest of the campaign with confidence.

“[The win] was the first step of many we have left, and it’ll serve to reassure the team of their quality,” he said after the game.

“Our nervousness and restlessness [for the last three days] hasn’t been good, but I know how far this team can go, providing everyone chips in.

“Our game plan was to peg them back and not let their most important players touch the ball.

“We were rather quiet at times, while we should have increased our lead at others.

“Jonathan Viera didn’t show what he was capable of, and that’s a credit to our players, because we played spectacularly well defensively.

“When you control [Sergio] Araujo and Viera, you take a lot of Las Palmas’ potential away.

“[Rival boss Paco Herrera] came over to apologise to me because [a bad pitch] frustrates the players and fans, but we adapted [to our surroundings] and did what we could, when we could.”
