Abelardo Fernandez hailed Sporting Gijon for a “spectacular” first half against Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday after they held on for a 3-2 victory at Riazor.
Antonio Sanabria’s early brace was quickly cancelled out by Juanfran Moreno and Luis Alberto, but Alex Menendez grabbed the winner for the new boys with an hour still to play.
“The first half was bad for the Coaches but beautiful for the spectators,” the Coach said after the game.
“It was crazy first half. We were spectacular in the opening 15 minutes. They came back [at 2-2] but we scored a third for 2-3.
“They had more control in the second half as we sat deeper, but it’s a very good win. All our three goals were beautiful.
“I’m happy because it’s hard to win away from home and we faced great opponents, who have a good squad, a good Coach and started the season brilliantly.
“We won and it’s an important and valued victory for us.”
