Emery: Players not to blame

Unai Emery has insisted that his Sevilla players were not at fault for Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat to Celta Vigo in La Liga.

Fernando Llorente’s goal in the second half was not enough to stop Los Nervionenses from falling to last place in the table after Nolito and Daniel Wass gave the Galicians a commanding lead before half-time.

“I didn’t see a lack of effort from my players. We have a lot of absences, either through injury or a lack of integration [referring to some of the new boys],” the Coach said after the game.

“Celta were superior in the first half, while we lacked some freshness.

“In the second half, we wanted to play with two strikers. We deserved the draw and even had chances to win.

“I wanted us to pick up from the win against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League, but we missed several players.

“Vitolo [who contracted muscle aches and had to be replaced after half an hour] wouldn’t have started if we had other wingers available.

“Improving on last season will be difficult, but right now we lack certain things. It’s a matter of working hard, but I have confidence in my team.”
