David Moyes believes Real Sociedad paid the price for a series of unfortunate incidents during Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Espanyol in La Liga.

La Real took an early lead through Imanol Agirretxe, but a red card for goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, followed by the Catalans pulling 2-1 ahead and Hernan Perez netting an injury-time winner after Jonathas equalised with four minutes of normal time remaining meant the side continued their winless start to the season.

“I’m disappointed with the outcome of the match,” the Scot said after the game.

“It wasn’t a good night, we deserved the draw and worked very hard with 10 men for the equaliser, but we lost in the last minute.

“We started the game very well, pressing well, with determination. I think we had chances to score more goals in the first half, but the match changed after the red card.

“I don’t think we defended well. We defended like we did against Real Betis, but it’s more difficult with 10 men on the pitch in the second half.

“In the first half, we showed a lot of good things but were unlucky. It was a double whammy, conceding a goal, losing a player and then needing a second goal, but after [Espanyol’s] goal and our red, everything became very difficult.

“We tried to cover everyone, but when one [opposing] player runs in behind, that’s when it’s necessary for the goalkeeper to stop the ball.

“[Carlos Vela] ran a lot during the time he was on the pitch, and as we had one less played, I wanted to inject more energy into out attack.”
