‘Valencia must improve at the back’

Nuno Santo is demanding a defensive improvement from Valencia when they host Real Betis in La Liga on Saturday.

Los Che have conceded seven goals in as many matches this season, including three against Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday, and the Coach is keen for his side to tighten up at the back.

“We must improve defensively because we’re being penalised by a few chances that we’re conceding,” he said at a Press conference.

“[On Wednesday], we were penalised by the small mistakes we made, which were embodied by [Zenit’s] three goals. One of our objectives [on Saturday] is to keep a clean sheet

“[La Liga] is a competition that we’re absolutely motivated for and focused on.

“We must learn how to separate the two competitions [La Liga and the Champions League], but the League remains fundamental for us.

“[Betis] are good opponents, newly-promoted but with very good players.

“Joaquin gives them more on a technical level. They’re good in possession and strong in the middle of the park.

“They’re rivals whom we respect for their quality, and they’ll make it very difficult for us.

“[On using two centre-forwards], it’s an option. We saw that the team improved [when Paco Alcacer came on to partner Alvaro Negredo against Zenit], and also in Gijon [with the same system].

“We have to go for the win and show that we can do better.”
