Griezmann: Cholo gave me freedom

Antoine Griezmann has revealed Diego Simeone told him to do ‘whatever he wants to create danger’ as Atletico Madrid beat Galatasaray.

Greizmann scored both goals as Atletico won in Istanbul, getting their Champions League campaign off to a winning start – unlike last year, when they were beaten by Olympiacos.

“Last year we lost in Athens and we didn’t want a repeat. We knew that it affects what happens later. We were eager to start with a win,” Griezmann said, AS reports.

“Simeone has told me to do whatever I want to create danger. That’s what I tried to do [against Gala] and luckily it all went well.

“It wasn’t important who scored. The goals were vital for a good start in this competition.

“At the beginning of the season I spoke with the Coach and told him I don’t have a preferred position, one more than another, and [he wanted me wide] against Galatasaray. I’m at his service.

“I’m very confident. I’m at a point where I know the danger I can create in attack, so that’s what I try to do in every game. Juanfran’s assist was very good. I controlled it well and the shot was perfect.

“There was no desire for revenge [after losing to Barcelona on Saturday], only winning the first Champions League game for a good start.

“We only lost once to Real Madrid last season and Barca are the best team in the world. Playing against them is the hardest but we’ll find a way.

“I’ve said before that when you play Barca you’re playing the best team in the world. They have a lot of possession and it’s not easy as a forward because they make you run a lot for the ball.”
