Pique: No Ter Stegen error

Gerard Pique dismissed any blame on Marc-Andre Ter Stegen for Alessandro Florenzi’s long-range goal in Barcelona’s draw with Roma.

The goalkeeper was beaten from near the half-way line in the first Champions League group game and some have been critical of Ter Stegen’s position, but Pique defended his teammate and praised the scorer.

“It’s not an error by Marc. It’s 100% Florenzi’s success. Ter Stegen gives life to the centre-backs with his advanced positioning,” Marca reports Pique saying as he took the unusual step of answering questions from his Twitter followers.

“I still can’t believe it. It’s one of the best goals I’ve been on the receiving of in my career.”

Pique moved on to respond to enquiries about the Champions League in general, his tendency to join the attack, and Barcelona’s shirt for the season.

“[The Champions League] is a great feeling. It’s the best competition against the best teams in Europe. It’s a great challenge,” he acknowledged.

“I always wanted to play as a striker but I wasn’t good enough. Imagine Leo Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar with Pique.

“I like the colour and design [of the shirt]. For me the most important thing is to feel comfortable with it.”
