‘Pique likes to be the centre of attention…’

Xavi Hernandez doesn’t believe the jeers directed at Gerard Pique are political and feels the Barcelona defender ‘likes the attention.’

Pique was whistled when playing for Spain and it was suggested his pro-Catalan independence stance was the reason, with others claiming it was anti-Real Madrid comments the cause.

“The whistles were about Kevin Roldan and the Barca-Madrid connection, not any political involvement,” Xavi told Marca, siding with the latter argument.

“If it was political then by that token, they’d have whistled me, Sergio Busquets, and all the Catalan players.

“Gerard likes to be the centre of attention. I’m not like that. I only like the attention when I have the ball on the pitch.

“Pique likes to be seen, to make jokes, and the fans didn’t like the joke about Madrid. So he as booed. It’s that easy.

“I never made those jokes and neither did Andre Iniesta. Pique does, but it’s not in bad faith. It’s not even important to him.

“At a Press conference he said it didn’t matter to him, that he doesn’t suffer from it. He doesn’t care. Me? I wouldn’t whistle him or anyone else.”
