Modric: Madrid must build on win

Luka Modric hopes Real Madrid can build on Saturday’s 6-0 thrashing of Espanyol after praising his teammates for a job well done.

The capital giants cantered to an easy victory over Los Periquitos thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, the latter scoring five, and the Croatian is keen for his side to use the result as a springboard to a purple patch.

“We scored very quickly, and that meant the match became easier for us,” he said after the game.

“We played very well. We’re pleased that we scored and didn’t concede. We have to keep playing well.

“The Coach wants to give chances to everyone, especially in games like [the one on Saturday], where the result is good for us.

“The team is the most important thing. The rest doesn’t matter.

“[Mateo Kovacic] is a very good player, very talented and has quality. He did very well when he entered the pitch [on Saturday].

Casemiro, who was Modric’s midfield partner against Espanyol, added: “I’m here to play and help the squad.

“All 23 players are very important, but we know we must be prepared to play. It’s something that the Coach always speaks about.

“I wasn’t here last season but the current squad are very good. We’re following the Coach’s advice and on track.

“We won, but now we must think about the Champions League and the match against Shakhtar [Donetsk].”
