‘Madrid won’t sign De Gea in January’

Florentino Perez has insisted that Real Madrid will not return to the negotiating table with Manchester United for David de Gea in January.

The goalkeeper's contract expires next summer, with no United renewal presently forthcoming, and the President hinted Madrid would only revisit their pursuit of the player if he became a free agent following their failure to sign him on transfer-deadline day in August.

“Madrid did what they had to do. We did everything possible for him to come,” he told Cadena COPE.

“De Gea did his best not to renew [with Unite] and we felt it was necessary to make the effort so he didn't feel abandoned.

“Ultimately, we didn't have time because Manchester [United] have no experience of negotiating these deals on the last day [of the transfer window], as happened with [Fabio] Coentrao.

“It's safe to say that we won't be signing him in January.

“There was some sort of compromise that Keylor would head the other way if United gave us the opportunity [to negotiate].

“De Gea has to do what's best for his care. We're not contemplating what will happen next season, but we have three great goalkeepers.

“We don't know what will happen in the coming year. He has to do what he has to do.

“I went to talk to [Navas] when his move was thwarted by United. I owe him no apology.

“If Keylor didn't want to leave, we wouldn't have included him in the [De Gea] deal.

“I told about the misfortune of what happened and that he was a phenomenon. He, [Kiko] Casilla and Ruben Yanez are also great goalkeepers.”
