Casillas: Pique wants to play for Spain

Iker Casillas has called for the whistling of Gerard Pique to end. “If Pique wears this shirt it’s because he wants to play for Spain.”

Pique has been targeted by fans reportedly unhappy with his politics, although it has also been suggested the Real Madrid-Barcelona rivalry is also a factor.

“We’ve talked to him. Nobody likes the whistles and he’s a teammate,” Casillas told reporters, according to Marca.

“We hope the fans forget this and somehow there’s a solution. We all want what’s best for the team. If Pique wears this shirt it’s because he wants to play for Spain.

“We all represent our country. We want the greater good and to do the best possible.”

Casillas moved on to non-Pique matters, having reached the landmark of 100 games as Spain captain in the win over Slovakia.

“I’m happy to have played so many matches, which was unthinkable. Every day I think it might be my last,” he revealed.

“I’m very happy to have been captain 100 times. Hopefully there’s more to come and I can continue to represent Spain.

“I’m happy to return to the national team. We’ll try to achieve the goal of France in 2016 and I’m grateful for help in any way possible.”
