Cazorla critical of Pique jeers

Santi Cazorla has demanded the mistreatment of Gerard Pique to stop after the defender was subjected to more boos during Spain-Slovakia on Saturday.

The Barcelona stopper was targeted by a vocal minority when La Roja hosted Costa Rica in Leon – a Real Madrid stranglehold – three months ago following derogatory comments he made about Los Blancos during his side's treble celebrations.

“We're happy with the win and now we must prepare for the match against Macedonia,” the Arsenal midfielder told Teledeporte after his country's 2-0 win against the Slovaks, which saw them move top of Group C in Euro 2016 qualifying.

“We were very good from the outset. It was important to win and give a good account of ourselves.

“This is the path we must follow for matches like today. We all played well.

“[On the boos], Pique is huge for us. Since Leon [in June], he's found himself in a strange situation and none of us understand it.

“Hopefully [the boos] will end soon and that he regains the full support of the crowd because he defends his country more than anyone else.”
