Vicente Del Bosque has offered encouragement to Diego Costa, who has struggled to replicate his club form when turning out for Spain.
Costa debuted for La Roja prior to the 2014 World Cup, having just won the title with Atletico Madrid, but has yet to score on a consistent basis for his adopted country.
“We called-up Diego because we believe in him. And we still believe he’ll be fine,” Del Bosque told an interview with ABC Deportes.
“He didn’t play badly in Slovakia or against Luxembourg and he’s doing well with Chelsea. We believe there’ll be a solution.
“We’ve scored the most goals in our group. Football isn’t a landslide any more. There’s balance and I think we’re doing well. It’s not bad, man.”
Del Bosque was also asked about the make-up of Spain’s midfield and suggested he has almost too many options.
“We have a large group. Juan Mata, David Silva, Cesc Fabregas, Isco, Andres Iniesta, Santo Cazorla, Thiago Alcantara, Koke, Sergio Busquets…look at what we have,” he pointed out.
“There’s an excess of midfielders and we can’t play them all. And we’ve had very significant absences in Xavi Hernandez and Xabi Alonso.”
