VdB: Spain nearly picked Valdes

Vicente del Bosque has revealed that he considered calling up Victor Valdes for Spain's upcoming matches against Slovakia and Macedonia.

The goalkeeper remains in the Manchester United wilderness after falling out with Louis van Gaal before the season, and the Coach hinted he sympathed with the former Barcelona No 1 – to the extent that he thought about giving him a “boost”.

“We considered calling up Valdes as his work for the national team has been very good,” he told La Sexta.

“I know the team aren't a charity, but maybe he needed a boost. In the end, we didn't call him up, but maybe we were cowards not to have done so.

“I think because we're all people, we must have feelings for one another.”
