Del Bosque: De Gea needs to play

Vicente Del Bosque has told David De Gea that to keep his place in the Spain squad, he needs to play regularly for Manchester United.

De Gea hasn’t played at all for his club this season after Louis Van Gaal froze the goalkeeper out of the side amid lingering speculation with a move to Real Madrid.

That transfer collapsed on Monday, deadline day in Spain, and it’s not known if Van Gaal will then restore De Gea to the XI when the Premier League resumes after the international break.

“If I have to say something [to De Gea] I will, but he will learn from this episode,” Del Bosque said, Marca reports.

“I want him to play and be happy and to come here you have to play well. If you haven’t been playing it’s very difficult to come here.”

Del Bosque went on to discuss Chelsea striker Diego Costa and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, pushing the former to do more for La Roja and praising the latter’s commitment.

“We count on Costa’s willingness and interest to play for the national team. We’re not happy with what he has done so far with us but he’s done well with Chelsea,” the Coach noted.

“Pique is a player who can lead under pressure. I hope Asturias applauds the national team and he deserves it.”
